I’ve never met a person who hasn’t lied at least once. Lying seems to be an almost universal human experience, a behavior we often rationalize by believing there is a good enough reason for it. However, how often do we stop to reflect on why we lie and what those lies mean? Understanding the motivations behind our dishonesty can reveal a lot about human nature; about who we are.
I am not here to demonize anyone, I am here to evoke reflection. So, here are four common reasons why people lie. Do any of them feel familiar?
1. To Avoid the Consequences of the Truth
One of the most common reasons people lie is to avoid the consequences that come with telling the truth. Whether it’s a mistake at work, a failing relationship, or a financial blunder, the fear of facing negative outcomes can lead to dishonesty. For instance, you might lie to avoid losing your job, upsetting a friend, or risking a divorce. In our efforts to dodge discomfort or pain, we opt for falsehoods, using lies as a temporary shield against the repercussions of our actions. Our lies rob us of responsibility and change our perception of who we are. Overtime, we may start to perceive ourselves as weak for cowering away from the outcome of our actions.
