I walked into the beautiful, historic Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozorište in Belgrade several weeks ago, filled with anticipation about seeing Alisa u Zemlji Strahova. I didn’t know what to expect, but I certainly wasn’t prepared for the experience that awaited me. I didn’t expect my own existential dread to unfold before my eyes. I didn’t expect to see my fears personified on stage. I didn’t expect my private thoughts to be articulated by a compelling ensemble of characters. Most of all, I didn’t expect Milena Radulović to so accurately depict what it’s like for women in their 30s.
When asked about her relationship to her role as Alice, she said: “Kako vreme prolazi, tako ja zapravo sve više prilazim toj granici od 35 godina. Meni je sve bliži i jasniji taj tekst. I sve više mi je jasno šta se toj ženi zapravo dešava.”
